![]() ![]() Olizarenko returned to athletics aiming for the 1984 Games, but those were boycotted by the Soviet Union, and she competed at the Friendship Games instead, placing third over 800 m. Earlier in 1978 she married the Ukrainian steeplechase runner Serhiy Olizarenko, and soon after the Olympics gave birth to daughter Oksana. Olizarenko took a break after the 1980 Olympics. ![]() Shortly before the 1980 Olympics, she set her first 800 m world record, running 1:54.85 in Moscow. Next year she won the 800 m event at the Universiade and placed second at the World Cup. She was included into the Soviet senior team in 1977, and debuted internationally as a senior at the 1978 European Championships, where she won silver medals in the 800 and 4×400 m relay. Next year she won the 400 m event at the Soviet Junior Championships, and became a member of the Soviet junior athletics team. Olizarenko took up athletics in 1967, together with her sister Natasha, who later became athletics coach. She still holds the world record in the 4×800 m relay set in 1984. Olizarenko won the 1986 European title in the 800 m, but failed to reach the final in this event at the 1988 Olympics. Other than world record holder Jarmila Kratochvílová in 1983, only two athletes, Pamela Jelimo of Kenya, in 2008, and Caster Semenya of South Africa, in 2018, have come within a second of Olizarenko's mark since it was set. Her 800 m world record was improved in 1983, but still remains the second-best time over that distance. At the 1980 Olympics she won the 800 m event, setting a world record at 1:53.43, and finished third in the 1500 m. Her personal best for 400 m is 49.61. ![]() She is one of only a handful of female athletes who have run under 1 minute and 55 seconds for 800 m: her best time of 1:54.44 was set when winning the IAAF World Cup in Barcelona in 1989, and she also ran 1:54.82 to beat Maria de Lurdes Mutola in a Grand Prix race in Cologne in 1997. She also won a silver at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She had international success in the following years too: she won a gold medal at the 1995 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Sweden and again in 1997 in Athens. She returned from her accident in late 1993 and won a silver medal in the Central America Games, behind the Surinam athlete Letitia Vriesde. Her daughter did not survive and died a week after she was born. She was pregnant at the time and gave birth to her daughter prematurely in hospital while fighting for her life. However the following year she was involved in a horrific domestic accident that left her seriously injured. Quirot won a silver medal at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and a bronze medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Ana Fidelia Quirot is a female former athlete from Cuba, who specialised in the 800 m but was also successful over 400 m. ![]()
